8va entrega de “Arte x el mundo“ hoy viajamos a Nueva York para conocer a Marcelo Gallegos, ilustrador y diseñador apasionado por los monstruos y fantasmas. A continuación una mini entrevista con él y un recorrido por sus trabajos destacados. (Como Marcelo nació en Estados Unidos la entrevista incluye traducción al ingles).
– ¿Cuándo empezaste con la ilustración? / When did you start with the picture?
Siempre he dibujado. Algunos de mis primeros recuerdos son de la creación de imágenes. Yo solía hacer mis propios cuadernos pequeños con papel de construcción y una grapadora, y los llenaba de imágenes. Se les llena de todo tipo de cosas – trajes, laberintos, curiosidades hortícolas, y de monstruos por supuesto.
I’ve always drawn. Some of my earliest memories are of creating images. I used to make my own tiny sketchbooks with construction paper and a stapler, and I would fill them with images. They would be filled with all manner of things — costumes, mazes, horticultural curiosities, and of course monsters.
– ¿De dónde proviene esa inclinación por monstruos y fantasmas? / Where does this penchant for monsters and ghosts?
Arrancó tan pronto como empecé a dibujar. Siempre recuerdo la fascinación por lo macabro. A los 5 años me ya me recorría la sección de terror del videoclub local y alquilaba todos los vídeos en orden alfabético. No estoy seguro de por qué mis padres me permitían esto. Me pasaba todas las noches gritando y tapandome los ojos delante de la televisión, horrorizado pero fascinado por los monstruos, fantasmas, sombras y psicópatas armados con cuchillos.
Desde entonces siempre me ha gustado recuperar esa sensación, ese miedo nostálgico que te hace sentir como un niño otra vez. Te mantiene joven!
It began as early as I began drawing. I always remember being fascinated by the macabre. Starting at age 5 I went through the entire horror section at the local video store and rented every video alphabetically. I’m not sure why my parents let me get away with this. I would spend every night screaming and covering my eyes in front of the television set, horrified but entranced by monsters, ghosts, shadowy figures, and knife-wielding psychotics.
Since then I’ve always liked to recapture that feeling, that nostalgic fear which makes you feel like a kid again. It keeps you young!
-¿Podés vivir de lo que te gusta? / Can you live what you love?
Yo no me gano la vida haciendo obras de arte. Me extendió entre las ilustraciones, diseños de logos, sitios web, y las comisiones de mis obras. Mientras tanto trabajo en varios proyectos personales.
Por ejemplo, estoy colaborando en dos libros de historietas en la actualidad. Uno es acerca de los demonios, magia y el ocultismo y el otro se refiere a los dioses mayas, hombres lobo, y viajes en el tiempo. Tengo la esperanza de lanzarlos durante el año.
I do eke out a living making artwork. I spread myself between doing illustrations, logos, website designs, and painting commissions. In between all that I work on several personal projects.
For instance, I am collaborating on two comic books currently. I am working on one which is about demons, magic, and the occult. The second involves Mayan gods, werewolves, and time travel. I am hoping to pitch both to publishers within the year.
-¿Cuál fue tu laburo mas importante o que te marcó? / What was your most important work or you scored?
Disfruté de muchos de los proyectos en los que he trabajado, es difícil decir con certeza. Una vez me llamaron de Tumblr para crear una pieza para sus oficinas de Nueva York, el proyecto fue muy divertido. Como a mi me encanta Tumblr, fue realmente un honor haber trabajado con ellos!
I have enjoyed so many of the projects on which I have worked, it’s difficult to say for certain. I was commissioned by tumblr to create a piece for their New York offices, which was very fun to work on. I also love tumblr so much, it was really an honor to have worked with them!
– Ultima ¿Qué mensaje le dejarías a los que estan empezando? / Last, what message you’d let those who are starting out?
Dibujá todos los días, y experimentá con diferentes materiales. No te compares con otros artistas, esto sólo te conduce a la frustración! También: sé más raro.
Draw every day, and experiment with different materials. Don’t compare yourself to other artists too often, it only leads to frustration! Also: be more weird.
